2000 years ago Jesus taught Jews how to find joy and tranquility outside the bounds of the increasingly oppressive religious and social system of the day. If Jesus were born in our day and in our land, what would he rebel against? Here is what I imagine he might preach (far more eloquently, of course):
You don't have to be wealthy to be happy. Happiness comes from within, and from meaningful relationships, productive labor, and physical health. Look at your big house, your many useless toys, your so-called shrewd investments, and now your growing debt — have they made you happy?
Look at your job — is that your idea of productive labor? Look at your relationships — you call that intimacy? Why aren't you doing what you love and sharing with whom you love? Why haven't you taken care of your body, the temple of your spirit?
Stop accumulating debt. It only serves the interests of corporations, banks, and politicians. Free yourself from debt, and it will stop poisoning your lives.
Whom have you been serving? Have you been growing wiser, more honorable and noble, or vainer, greedier, and weaker?
Don't buy what you and your neighbors can provide for yourselves. Don't accumulate what you cannot use. Don't eat and consume more than you need. Happiness comes not from having, but from being.
Take care of the Earth; it is what feeds and clothes you. Don't destroy what cannot be replaced. Be wise stewards and the land will grow in productivity; treat it poorly and it will starve you to death.
The system has ensnared you and made you feel like you have no choice but to serve it, but this is not true. Freedom comes from within, not without.
You don't have to live in approved housing, work in approved organizations, and eat approved food. You don't have to file tax returns, obtain permits, and sign forms.
You don't have to sit idly by waiting for work to be handed to you, while sinking ever deeper into debt. Provide for yourselves and cast off the snares of the system.
Rely on yourselves and on your neighbors, not on corporations and government. So what if they send you to jail. It is just as easy to be happy there as anywhere else, and they cannot send everyone to jail, can they?
